I have known and admired Nancy Sporborg, the author of this tribute, for many years. She wrote a book about climbing the 67 4,000-foot mountains in New England, It's Not About the Hike. She worked as a development officer for the hospital and other organizations and she ran the Keene Pumpkin Festival for twelve years.
Nancy lives near us and I see her while she is walking her dog, Grace. Nancy and I would frequently chat. When I learned that I had ALS, Charlotte and I decided to email and tell her I had ALS before I ran into her on a walk, because I knew her mother had died of ALS. When I next saw her she immediately suggested a gift to me of writing about my life. We started the process without any promises or expectations, only that we would spend time talking. She interviewed me for two hours on five or six Fridays. We both enjoyed each other during the process, and she went on to interview seven other people who know me well. During our discussions I learned a lot about her and her family, It was a really happy time together and I'm pleased to share the results with you.
